Red Bull F1 (with David Coulthard) at Turn 8, in 2011!

Les & Jon do a great job of describing automotive/racing happenings, they even mention the SAF1C race watch parties! (Select podcast #5, 22:12 in…)  Here’s what they have to say about themselves:

Jon and Les are pure and absolute motorsports nuts who consume anything motorsports related.  From month to month our focus shifts to the current hot topic, whether it is worldwide or centric to Central Texas.

Both have participated as drivers and spectators numerous times in motorsporting events, be they club, private or open to the public. On any given day, during our non-corporate hours, we can be found wrenching on something fun, learning about new technology, attending car/bike shows or watching races.

In our pod casts, we will do our best to provide reliable information, as we become aware of it.  We will reference direct quotes and legitimate media sources as the source. We are not here to perpetuate rumors or make inflammatory statements, neither are we lawyers!

We hope you enjoy our pod cast and look forward to hearing from you after you have listened to them.

Upcoming Chinese GP Race Watch Party Anticipated

2012 FORMULA 1 UBS CHINESE GRAND PRIX (Image courtesy of Formula1.com)

By this coming Sunday, April 15th, it will have been a LONG 3 weeks since the last Formula 1 race in Malaysia.  I don’t know about you, but I almost feel symptoms of F1 withdrawl.  Watching recent IndyCar racing hasn’t been helpful, either.  Some thought the current “duckbill” nose of F1 cars is not pretty.  Well, in my opinion, the new Dallara DW12 IndyCars are uglier, with their saddlebag rear ends….  What do you think?

2012 Formula 1 'Duckbill' Nose - VS. - 2012 Dallara DW12 IndyCar - YOU DECIDE !

Plans are being set in motion to host our next SAF1C Race Watch Party at the Alamo Heights location of the Lion & Rose Pub, this Sunday, April 15th at 1:30pm.  This Grand Prix race will take place in China at the Shanghai International Circuit.  The race is officially titled the 2012 FORMULA 1 UBS CHINESE GRAND PRIX.  Here’s the Lion & Rose Pub promo you’ll see at the door as you enter.

Join Us at the Lion & Rose for the Grand Prix of China Race Watch Party!

This is another Tilke-designed track (like The Circuit of The Americas, which is being built just south of Austin, TX).  The Shanghai Circuit debuted in 2004 to bring Formula 1 to China in a grand way.  The racing action should be interesting with the long, high speed straights.  As I understand it, there will only be 1 DRS (Drag Reduction System) passing zone.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you San Antonio area Formula 1 race fans this Sunday.  Tell/invite a friend to come along!

SAF1C Malaysia GP Race Watch Party Fun

Today was Round 2 of the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship, the Malaysia GP.  The San Antonio F1 Club (SAF1C) enjoyed watching the Formula 1 racing action.  This race took place on the Sepang Circuit, in Kuala Lumpur, but we were able to enjoy this F1 event within the hospitable confines of the Lion & Rose Pub.  Here is the flyer that Lion & Rose General Manager, Greg Morgan, put together to support us & attract more fans.

Join us at the Lion & Rose for the SAF1C Race watch party of the Malaysia GP!With this being only our 2nd SAF1C party, we are gaining momentum & enthusiasm.  The San Antonio racing community is waking up!  Today we had about 12+ fans show up & enjoy the F1 camaraderie.  We enjoyed the differing challenges of the Sepang Circuit (vs. last week’s Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne Australia), especially with the changing tires & delay the rain brought upon the race.  This truly showcased the differences between a dedicated F1 track & converted street circuit…and weather!  Here’s an overview of the Sepang Circuit.

  • Thanks for participating – please sign up for reminders & review SAF1C.com
  • What the San Antonio F1 Club is all about:
    • Race watch parties
    • F1-related events & participation as a group
    • Share your Formula 1 passion with fellow F1 fans
  • The 2012 IndyCar Series premiers today, at St. Petersburg
  • NASCAR news?  Happy 30th Birthday Danica Patrick…
  • Door Prizes!

  • Be patient, the next race is April 15th (in 3 weeks), the Shanghai GP, in China
  • We look forward to seeing you here again (then) at the Lion & Rose Pub!

We then went straight away to the DVR’d race watch festivities.

Successful 1st SAF1C Race Party Enjoyed By All

Today’s first Formula 1 race party in San Antonio was fun & enjoyed by all.  We had 3 big screens worth of F1 racing action & the sound was great, as well.  This bodes well for continued SAF1C (SanAntonioF1Club.com) race parties.  Here’s the front outside of the Lion & Rose Pub in Alamo Heights.

The front parking lot outside the Lion & Rose British Pub, Alamo Heights, San Antonio, TX.

I was pleased that at least 15 F1 race fans from not only San Antonio, but Austin, Houston & even Mexico, turned up at the Lion & Rose Pub.  Greg Morgan, the General Manager, did a great job in setting up & staging the DVR F1 race recording from the night before.

SAF1C group enjoying food, drinks & the F1 Australia GP race...

Before the Australia GP race playback, I welcomed everyone with the following:

Dan welcoming F1 race fans to the 1st SAF1C race watch party.Welcome to the 1st San Antonio F1 race watch party!  My name is Dan Scanlon of SAF1C & blogger at RacingReady.com.  This is just the first of many such parties we plan on having during this Formula 1 season.  Please join me in thanking Greg Morgan, & the original Lion & Rose Pub staff, for hosting our party here today.  Enjoy some food & drink – have a good time.

A little history…  Austin had started these F1 race watch parties over a year ago & they have grown tremendously in popularity.  Currently, there are 2 venues in Austin that have over 100 attendees.  I went to 4 of these parties last summer.  I had a good time & made good friends, but did not like the 200 mile round-trip.  I felt we needed to do these parties here in San Antonio, too!

So, I formed SanAntonioF1Club.com & here we are.  In addition to these parties, we are working with the F1 clubs in Austin to coordinate some possible special race fan activities at CoTA, maybe some special group tickets pricing for the actual F1 race in November, & more!

One of last year’s Austin party hosts is Wyman Gilliam of Wild Bubba’s Wild Game Grill.  He is here, along with Vance Facundo, to help us kick-off our season of race watch parties.  When you’re in the vicinity of the Circuit of The Americas, be sure to stop by Wild Bubba’s grill to enjoy all sorts of wild game eats – it’s good food & there’s a lot of great F1 ambiance in there!

There are some SanAntonioF1Club.com cards over there, along with a flyer about the Formula Expo coming to Austin’s Convention Center in June.  Also over there is a signup sheet if you’d like to be texted and/or e-mailed a notification reminder of the next race watch party.

Watching the race, you’ll notice a number of rules & design changes which have mixed up what we may see in racing results this year – most noticeable is the duckbill nose for safety.

We have a SAF1C Trivia Challenge; the winner gets this limited edition Circuit of The Americas hat!

Thanks for being here.  Please be sure to tell your friends!  The next party will be here, next Sunday, March 25th – at the same time: 1:30pm!

During the party I was busy visiting with existing friends & meeting new ones.  We all share the same passion for world class motorsports racing in Formula 1.  We are waking up a Formula 1 fan base in San Antonio, satisfying their race watch sharing interaction needs with these SAF1C events.  I’m glad I had recorded the race at home – I was too busy socializing & networking to really enjoy the race.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the Pub’s Specials that the Lion & Rose had put together for our SAF1C race party.  It’s always great to have offered themed food & drink.

Having both Wild Bubba Gilliam (of Wild Bubba’s Wild Game Grill) & Vance Facundo (of Friends of Formula 1) in attendance was great.  Bubba mentioned their Speed City Cam website.

They have set up a special webcam atop a 40′ pole, just east of the Circuit of The Americas track.  It is set up to continuously scan the circuit area 24/7.  Check it out.  If you need racing community advertising space, they are looking for additional sponsors.

Besides watching the F1 racing action, fans signed up for future texting/e-mail notification of future SAF1C events.  If you would like to add you name to that list, please send me an e-mail at: dan@racingready.com.  Include your phone number if you would like to be texted, as well.  Thank you!

SAF1C fans signing up!

It is confirmed that the SAF1C race parties WILL continue with next week’s Formula 1 race in Malaysia!  Once again, we will meet at the Lion & Rose Pub, Alamo Heights location, in San Antonio, TX at 1:30pm.  We hope you can make it.  Those of you who were there, thanks for the compliments you offered in getting this started.  Please tell your friends about these F1-related race events.  We want this to grow!

The SAF1C after party group shot - here's where we started...

It was good to get together to see Jenson Button win the 2012 Australian GP.  Let’s see what happens next week on the outskirts of the jungles of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  We hope to see you there for the SAF1C viewing party of the 2012 Formula 1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix.  Race On!

P. S. – Vance did a GREAT of posting his pix on Facebook!

1st F1 Race Watch Party in San Antonio!

F1 Austalian GP - Melbourne, Albert Park - March 18, 2012San Antonio Formula 1 race fans – finally, this is what we’ve been waiting for!  This coming Sunday (March 18th, 2012) will be the first F1 race watch party in San Antonio.  It was a challenge to find a sports bar location that already had DVR capability & watcher friendly TV screens with good audio capability.  This is the first Formula 1 race of the 2012 season, taking place down under, in Melbourne, Australia.  (per Formula1.com, this race is officially titled the 2012 Formula 1 Qantas Australian Grand Prix)

Yes!  The first San Antonio F1 race watch party will take place at the Lion & Rose British Restaurant & Pub in Alamo Heights, at 1:30pm, this Sunday March 18th, 2012!  Thanks to a referral from Tim Rooney, of Waxy O’Conner’s Irish Pub (on the San Antonio Riverwalk), I met Gregg Morgan of the Alamo Heights Lion & Rose.  They currently DVR a multitude of soccer & rugby matches from around the world.  Gregg stated there are already some Formula 1 fans that frequent his pub.  In addition, since it will be the day after St. Patrick’s Day, the pub will be like a ghost town.  He said we’d almost have the place to ourselves. GREAT!!!

Lion & Rose Britsh Pub main bar - with good views of TV monitors!

In addition to the pre-recorded F1 video feed, Gregg will put the F1 race audio over the general pub BOSE speaker system.  This location will be a great venue & a good first effort at a San Antonio-based social activity revolving around watching Formula 1 racing.

San Antonio F1 Club - SAF1C BannerI hope you can make it to experience Formula 1 world class racing, with your friends.  Please note, this will be great preparation for learning what’s new this year in Formula 1 (once again, new rules & regulations).  This could be considered a primer to help you get ready for (& more excited about) the upcoming Formula 1 race just south of Austin, coming up on November 18th, 2012 – the Austin F1 USGP, at the Circuit of The Americas (CoTA)!

The Lion & Rose pub offers a great selection of hand drawn pints of beer. In addition, they have a full menu with a broad variety of food that should please most anyone’s palate.

WE WILL SEE YOU THIS SUNDAY at 1:30pm, at the Lion & Rose Pub, Alamo Heights, 5148 Broadway, here in San Antonio, Texas.  :-)  With a good showing, we can continue at this location, unless some of you can suggest a possibly better location for the next Formula 1 race, scheduled the following Sunday, March 25th…  Here’s a map to the party! Hamilton & Button Ready for Austin USGP! VodaFone McLaren Mercedes announcement

Team Vodafone McLaren Mercedes has unveiled the car it will campaign in the upcoming Formula One season that includes the inaugural United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas on November 18.

“I’m really excited about heading back to the States,” Button said. “I’ve never been to Austin but I’ve heard great things about the city itself. And I’ve heard also great things about the circuit and the layout, and hopefully we can put on a great show when we get there.”

“I remember racing in the States before in Indianapolis which was a good circuit. But the steps that Austin has taken to make sure this is a proper, F1 circuit, I think we’re going to love it. It’s going to be a lot of fun. And hopefully we have the support of the American fans.”

Fans at the Circuit of The Americas and the other tracks this season will see a record six Formula One World Champions in action as Kimi Raikkonen makes his return to race alongside Button, Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso and 2010 and 2011 champion Sebastian Vettel.

In anticipation of the frenzy of F1 fans wanting to order tickets, CoTA has announced hiring on Legends Sales & Marketing to be the tickets processing company.  They have started the hiring process for new ticketing agents.  If you’re interested, here’s your chance to get in on the action.

Team to Hire Twenty Ticket Sales Positions in February

AUSTIN, Texas – January 23, 2012 – Legends Sales & Marketing has been chosen to join the Circuit of The Americas’ team to provide personal seat license and ticket sales services. Legends Sales & Marketing has proven experience in designing and marketing unique seating arrangements and experiences for sports venues, and currently manages ticket sales for the San Francisco 49ers new stadium, the Rose Bowl and the New York Red Bulls’ Red Bull Arena along with a number of other world-class venues. Previous clients of the Legends management team include Cowboys Stadium, Yankee Stadium, and MetLife Stadium.

“Legends impressed us with their track record and the emphasis they put on providing ticket buyers with a great value,” said Geoff Moore, chief marketing and sales officer of Circuit of The Americas. “I am pleased they have joined our team in this key role.”

“We’re excited to bring our unique approach to Circuit of The Americas and to be able to contribute to growing the fan base,” said Chad Estis, president of Legends Sales & Marketing. “It is truly a one-of-a-kind venue, and we believe high performance motor sports racing is going to represent a hot growth area relative to other sports categories. He and his organization will focus on ticket, suite, and select seating placement, and on methods for delivering an enhanced experience for all fans that goes beyond the races themselves.

Ticket Advisor Hiring Process

Legends Sales & Marketing plans to hire up to 20 new ticketing advisors to assist fans in their ticket selections and purchases. Interviewing has begun for candidates with experience in the Austin, San Antonio, Houston and DFW markets. Additionally, the company has scheduled a job fair on February 24-25 at InterContinental Hotel Stephen F. Austin at 701 Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas to accept resumes and conduct interviews for the most immediate openings. Legends Sales & Marketing plans to be fully staffed by March 1, 2012 and fully prepared to assist ticket buyers interested in the 2012 FORMULA 1 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX scheduled for November 16-18.

I am curious about the process of establishing & supporting a new motorsports venue.  I’m sure you, readers of SAF1C, are too.  More here as it develops…
